Peret

Peret ( born March 26, 1935 in Mataró, near Barcelona; actually Pedro Pubill Calaf Calaf and Pere Pubill i ) is a Catalan guitarist and singer and an outstanding representative of the Catalan rumba.

Life

During his childhood, Peret was more with his father, a traveling draper, in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands on the road than at school. At the same time he was very familiar with the guitar music of the gypsies, and already the age of twelve he was from the very beginning itself together with a cousin as a musician at a children's festival on the stage of Tívoli in Barcelona. At that time, there was also a first now lost disk recording.

His livelihood, he earned first as his father as a traveling salesman and also spent some time in Argentina. As a musician, he joined only in passing, but soon made a name in and around Barcelona and finally took off in 1957 some plates. Musically, he was oriented in the direction of Rumba Catalana popularized by musician El Pescaílla.

He was also known for his spirited style of play is ventilador (fan style) called El. He isolates the hitting arm and the guitar swirls around its axis. He also uses the guitar body by hitting and beating and tossing as a percussion instrument.

Breakthrough

The mid-1960s began Perets great career with the transition into the capital Madrid. With a mix of the music of his homeland, Cuban sounds, flamenco and modern rock 'n ' roll, he developed a style of music that could conquer the pop music and disco scene of the time. Especially in Spain known hits from this period are El muerto vivo, Una lágrima, El gitano Antón, Don Toribio Carambola and others. His success earned him the nickname Rey de la Rumba, King of the Rumba, a.

Several times he starred in Spanish movies as a singer. Particularly in the early 1970s, he also had some other film roles, a career as an actor but was not it.

His biggest musical hit was Peret 1971. Borriquito The song was not only in Spain for summer hit. Since the country had become also a popular holiday destination, Spain vacationers incorporated the song back to back in their home countries and it was across the continent a big hit, reached in the charts, among others, No. 1 in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands and 2nd place in Switzerland. The success made it out especially the simple, child- song-like chorus and mood -making melody, which made the song into a catchy sing along.

However, the attempt to take in the following years to the international success failed. The typical rumba Peret was limited in its popularity in Spain and Latin America. In 1974 he tried again on the Euro Visions Grand Prix in Europe. With Canta y sé feliz he reached but only a mediocre ninth place at the end and made no return to the international charts. In Spain the song was, however, another summer hit.

Religion

Throughout the 1970s Peret continued his successful music career continued in his homeland. In 1982 he retired then surprisingly completely from the music back, the Iglesia de Filadelfia Evangélica, the largest religious community of the Spanish Gitanos joined (Roma ) on. He devoted himself in the following years exclusively to preaching and religious activities.

Only in 1991, after his resignation from the Church, he returned to music and took again new albums. A special honor was bestowed to him in 1992 when he sang as a representative of Catalonia in Barcelona at the Olympic Games at the closing ceremony, which was an expression of appreciation of his work in his homeland. 2000 appeared the album Rey de la Rumba, a remake of his biggest hits along with other renowned artists.
