Peter Jankowitsch

Peter Jankowitsch (* July 10, 1933 in Vienna) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ) and diplomat. He was the successor of Leopold Gratz and predecessor of Alois Mock the eleventh Foreign Minister of the Second Republic.

Life

Foreign policy work

After studying law at the University of Vienna, where he earned a juris doctorate in 1958, Peter joined Jankowitsch whose political career as chairman of the Association of Socialist Students ( VSStÖ ) began in 1957 in the Austrian Foreign Ministry a. In 1964 he opened - as the youngest ambassador in the history of the Republic - Austria's first embassy in francophone Africa in Dakar ( Senegal). In 1970 he was Head of Cabinet of the Federal Chancellor Bruno Kreisky, whose closest associates he belonged. In 1973, he joined as the Permanent Representative (Head Delegate ) Austria to the United Nations in New York ( until 1978 ). In this role, he was until 1974 the first representative of Austria in the United Nations Security Council and its chairman in rotation. He was also elected President of the UN Space Committee ( COPUOS ).

1986-1987 he was Secretary of State under Vranitzky ( I. Cabinet), December 1990 - April 1992 First State for European Affairs ( III.). Prior to 1978-83 and then 1993-98 was Jankowitsch Permanent Representative of Austria to the OECD. He sat down intensively for their openness to the new democracies of Eastern and Central Europe. As the lead Mitverhandler the Multinational Agreement on Investment ( MIA) he sought a " fair balance between winners and losers " of globalization. Jankowitsch in this period were, among others, also the chair of the Parliamentary Assembly of the EFTA, the Joint Parliamentary Committee Austria - EC and the Human Rights Commission of the Socialist International (SI). With concerns of developing countries, it dealt in the Socialist International on the side of their President Willy Brandt. He further served as co -chair of the first Africa - Committee of the SI. He was also an observer of Austria to the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM ) and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, and headed the Vienna Institute for Development and Cooperation, founded by Bruno Kreisky ( VIDC ).

Since 1998 Jankowitsch Secretary General of the Austro-French Centre for Rapprochement in Europe ( OEFZ ) and president of the Society Austria Vietnam ( GOR ). In addition, he is President of the Jerusalem Foundation in Austria, Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Agency for Aerospace, as well as Honorary President of the Austrian Society for European policy.
