Peter Nicol

Peter Nicol, MBE (born 5 April 1973 in Inverurie, Scotland ) is a former Scottish- English squash player. His greatest success was winning the World Cup 1999. Was the first British number one in the world he lived a total of 60 months at the top of the rankings.

Career

Peter Nicol won in his fourteen- year career, all the prestigious titles that could be won on the professional tour in squash. He won several times the U.S. Open, the British Open, the Tournament of Champions, the PSA Super Series, several gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and was a total of 60 months world ranking first.

The highlight of his career was winning the 1999 World Cup with a smooth victory over the Egyptians Ahmed Barada. As in the two subsequent years because of sponsorship problems no World Cup could be performed, the left-hander was a fight for three years as world champion. It is worth noting especially his constant position in the world rankings: Overall, he spent five years the number one in the world, where he claimed the position in 2002 and 2003 without interruption for themselves. He was also the first British world number one at all. Since squash was taken at the 1998 Commonwealth Games as the competition, there had been up to no end Nicols career singles final without him. Twice he won gold in the individual, which also succeeded in doubles.

Nicols career was marked throughout the course of the rivalry with the Canadian Jonathon Power. In the final statistics, Nicol could say with 22 wins against 21 defeats against Power. 2006 ended Nicol his career at the World Championship in Cairo. His last match he lost to Frenchman Thierry Lincou in the quarter-finals with 1:3. In the world rankings, he was out the last time in September 2006 to position six.

Citizenship and honors

Born Scot Nicol had to get after several years of active representation of Scotland on the international squash scene more and more the feeling of the Officials of the Association of insufficient support. In 2001, Nicol therefore decided to play for England. Due to numerous merits and achievements in squash sport was Peter Nicol 1999, awarded in the year of his world championship title, the British royal house of the honorary title of Member of the British Empire ( MBE).
