Peter Zumthor

Peter Zumthor ( born April 26, 1943 in Basel, Switzerland ) is an internationally renowned Swiss architect and former conservators at the Memorial office in his home canton of Graubünden, Chur. For his life's work, he was honored in 2009 with a major architecture award, the Pritzker Prize.

Life

1943 Peter Zumthor was born the son of a master carpenter in Basel. His first training as a cabinet maker, he graduated with his father, then studied interior architecture and design at the School of Art Basel as well as architecture and industrial design at Pratt Institute in New York. For ten years he worked as an employee of Monuments of the canton of Graubünden. Peter Zumthor lives and works in stone heap at Churchill since 1979 with its own architectural office in Haldenstein ( around 20 employees).

As a former curator of monuments he has received about the Val Lumnezia and a historical building in alpine valleys.

In the architectural scene Zumthor is considered to be a loner, puts special emphasis on the selection of the materials used.

1993 Zumthor won the architecture competition in Berlin for the memorial and the Nazi documentation center Topography of Terror. After construction costs became EUR 38.8 million from the originally planned 22.5 million euros, figured out a feasibility study on possible additional 3 to 5 million euros. Stating this appeal, the State of Berlin Zumthor announced in May 2004 and wrote the competition from new. In the dispute over the demolition of the towers already built, the country could also prevail against Zumthor.

Peter Zumthor was a professor at the Accademia di Architettura of the Università della Svizzera italiana in Mendrisio.

Family

He is married to Annalisa Zumthor - Cuorad, a writer of Romansh literature, and the couple have three grown children. Zumthor plays in his free jazz with the double bass. His son Peter Conradin Zumthor is a music teacher and jazz drummer, he plays among others in the Lucas Niggli Drum Quartet.

Architectural Model Collection

The Kunsthaus Bregenz ( KUB ) has a collection of over 300 architectural models Zumthor that are archived by KUB since the local solo exhibition in 2007. They concern both realized and not built projects. There are constantly adding new models. Since 2012, a portion of this collection is issued in the post office building next to the Kunsthaus in exchange.
