History

The Petit Pont is in this form since 1853, but is one of the oldest bridges in the city. As part of the Cardo of Lutetia between the Rue de la Cité and the Rue du Petit Pont existed at this point even before the conquest of Gaul by the Romans a bridge over the river: when Titus Labienus in 52 BC with his troops, approached the city, the Parisii destroyed this bridge to make it harder for enemies to Translate and the capture of the city.

The Romans built the bridge in wood again (as opposed to the bridge over the large Seinearm for which they used stone) and made it a central part of their road from Soissons to Orleans, the Cardo of the city, a few meters from the south also the streets to Burgundy and Lyon ( see Rue Galande ) branched off.

After the siege, the Petit Pont was rebuilt. In addition, the bridge of the Romans was that reached within the Cardo of the Île de la Cité from the right bank of the Seine (now the Pont Notre -Dame), by the wooden Pont du Roi or Grand Pont about 150 meters down the river (now the Pont au Change ) replaced, so that Paris until the 14th century still had only two bridges, which moreover do not even lay in a line. The two castles ( the Grand Chatelet and the Petit Châtelet), which now protect these bridges, lost with the construction of the city wall by King Philip Augustus their protective function.

The bridges over the Seine, and the Petit Pont were strongly built (houses on bridges were the most hygienic ) and thus economic centers of the city.

Only in 1379 did Hugues Aubriot downstream about 200 meters down the stone Pont Saint -Michel build through which the Petit Pont was relieved. 1393 then the Petit Pont was destroyed by a tidal wave. 1395 was Raymond du Temple commissioned a new building, but in 1408, also suffered a renewed surge as the new Pont Saint -Michel, which the city was divided in two in fact. Both bridges were then built.
