Philip Edward Archer

Philip Edward Archer ( born February 22, 1925 Tarkwa, Western Region, Ghana ) had between 1991 and 1995 held the office of Chief Justice of Ghana and was chief judge. Archer was the eighth Chief Justice of independent Ghana successor of ENP Sowah and Isaac Kobina Abban of predecessors.

Training

Archer was born in Abontiakrom, a district Tarkwas in the Western Region in Ghana. In Sekondi he attended St. Peter 's School and later moved to the secondary education at the Adisadel College in Cape Coast. After finishing school, Archer went to the University of Nottingham, UK to begin his law degree in 1953.

Career

In 1957, Archer was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court (England). In the same year he returned to the country's independence and returned to Ghana. In a registrar (Registrar - General ) office, he began his professional career in 1959 appointed itself as the clerk and recorded in 1961 in the state legal service as Court Clerk ( Judicial Secretary ).

Due to his outstanding achievements Archer was appointed in 1964 to the position of a judge of the High Court and received in 1980 the appointment of a judge of the Supreme Court in Accra. Archer was significantly active in the fight against corruption in different disciplinary committees. In 1983, Archer retired from the office of judge and was in the same year, Chairman of the Commission on Judicial Reform ( Law Reform Commission ) under the military junta of Jerry Rawlings, who had a putsch in 1981 to power.

Even before the founding of the Fourth Republic of Ghana Archer was appointed by the military leadership of the Provisional National Defence Council ( PNDC ) led by Jerry Rawlings as Chief Justice in 1991. He held until 1995 this position.

Other positions

Archer was Chairman of the Board of the University of Cape Coast between 1979 and 1983 and a member of the State Council (Council of State ), a constitutional body of the Constitution of Ghana in 1995 after he was divorced as Chief Justice from office.

Honors

Archer has been honored with the Order of the Star of Ghana, the highest civilian honors of the state, by Rawlings in 2000.
