Philip I of Croÿ-Chimay

Philippe I de Croy (* November 1436; † September 18, 1482 in Bruges ) from the old French- Burgundian noble family of Croy was the second Count of Chimay, Seigneur of Sempy and Quiévrain and an influential member of the Burgundian court. He was not with his cousin of the same name, Philippe I de Croy, Count of Porcéan (1435-1511), to be confused, who held an important position also at the Burgundian court.

Life

Philippe was knighted in 1453 after the Battle of Gavre. He served the Burgundian dukes Philip the Good and Charles the Bold as a military leader, Envoy, advice and Chamberlain. 1458 he was appointed captain-general ( capitaine générale ) of Hainaut.

Due to the pro- French attitude of his family at the Burgundian court he had in 1465 along with other family members, including his father Jean II and his uncle Antoine I., flee from the Burgundian territories, but he soon came back and was in 1468 by Charles the bold officially pardoned.

Philippe was in 1473 elected a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece and was 1474-1477 governor of Gelderland.

During the Battle of Nancy on 5 January 1477 at the Charles the Bold lost his life, he was captured. After his release in August 1477, he went back to the Burgundian court and entered the service of the new Duke Maximilian I, became its first chamberlain and captain general of Luxembourg.

Family

Philippe's parents were Jean II de Croy († March 25, 1473 ) and Marie de Lalang († January 20, 1475 ).

In 1454 he married Walburga von Moers, daughter of Count Vinzenz von Moers and his wife Anne of Bavaria. Together they had the following children:
