Pignia

Pignia ( German and Pignieu to 1952 ) was until December 31, 2008, a municipality in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. They belonged to the circle Shams in the district Rhine.

On 1 January 2009 Pignia has merged with Clugin and Andeer Andeer to the community.

Geography

Pignia lies on a terrace on the right bank of the Rhine behind the western foot of a mountain range, is the highest point of the Piz Curvér. The village is located 11.5 km south of Thusis and consists of the village and the Alpine hamlet Bavugls ( 1,940 m above sea level. M. ). Of the total municipal area of 1343 ha 572 ha is arable, of which 496 ha as Alpine farms ( mountain pastures ). The mountainous character of the community prove the 436 ha of unproductive area. More 323 ha of the former municipality area is covered by forest and woodland; the rest of 12 ha settlement area.

Languages

Original language of the inhabitants is Sutselvisch, a Grison Romanesque dialect. Although the proportion of Romansh from 1880 to 1941 fell 96% to 90%, but put the actual language change until the second half of the 20th century. German is the only language authorities, and the proportion of Romansh is steadily decreasing.

At least 30% of the population understand or Romansh.

Origin and nationality

From the end of 2005 118 inhabitants were 116 Swiss nationals.

Attractions

Monumental is the Protestant church.
