Pirelli Tower

Via Fabio Filzi 22

The Pirelli Tower is the fourth tallest building in the Italian city of Milan and one of its landmarks. It is located in the central business district and close to Milano Centrale Train Station.

Baudaten

The office building was built in 1958 as the headquarters of the tire manufacturer Pirelli (hence the popular name Pirellone = Italian for " the big Pirelli " ) and 1960 inaugurated, but the government and the Parliament of the Lombardy region headquarters since 1978. The Pirelli Tower was the second tallest building in Europe when completed with 127.10 meters. The architects of the hexagonal tower were Gio Ponti and Pier Luigi Nervi.

Specifications

The building is 124.0 meters high, wide at the narrow side 18.5 m deep and on the wide side 70,40 m. The roof to 127.10 m seems to float above the building. The continuous curtain wall is formed by a double glazing, which is supported by aluminum frames. The two narrow sides converge pointed and form a gap in the middle.

Construction

The structure consists of two triangular elements on the narrow sides, an elevator core in the center of the building, as well as internal pillars. The vertical concrete skeleton follows the flow of forces, which it is apparent that rejuvenate the pillar on the lower floors of 2 m thickness to 50 cm thick in the upper floors. The support structure inside allows a largely column-free office space and allows great flexibility in the subdivision of the floor plan and within each open-plan offices.

Flooring

Since Pirelli also manufactured rubber pads, a special floor covering was designed by Gio Ponti. He sat down with the production processes of the rubber coverings intensively, experimenting with different colors and designs. The colors finally used yellow, black and white are considered the colors of the company Pirelli. Ponti created a very expressive, coarsely mixed rubber pad, which he called " giallo fantastico" ( fantastic yellow).

Others

After this architectural model Ponti built in the late 1950s in Baghdad, the Iraqi Ministry of Planning. The same time built Telefunken in Berlin ( 1958-60 ) is created very similar in design and layout, but dispenses with the curtain wall and emphasizes instead the design details, the tapered columns are clearly reflected in the facade. From 1960 to 1962, a building was erected in Basel with Lonza's Tower which has great similarities with the Pirelli Tower.

On 18 April 2002 the Swiss pilot Luigi Fasulo crashed his small plane of the brand Rockwell Commander A112TC with the registration HB- NCX in the Pirelli Tower ( three dead and 70 injured).

As of 2003 the building was renovated all-encompassing. The 26th floor has been converted into a "place of memory" ( luogo della memoria ). In March 2009, the redesigned Belvedere was opened, in which the structure of the construction is visible.

The building in movies

  • The input sequence of the Italian film La Notte Michelangelo Antonioni from 1961 shows the Pirelli skyscraper shortly after completion. The subsequent bias begins on the roof of the building. An external lift goes from 31 floor down. The city is reflecting in the glass facade.
  • In Maurizio Lucidi feature film Angel of Death Tomas Milian operates an advertising agency in the building.
  • In the movie The International ( 2009), the building served as a backdrop for a political assassination on the front of it Piazza Duca d' Aosta.
