Pirkkala

Pirkkala [ pirk ɑlɑ ː ] ( swedish Birkala ) is a municipality in Finland.

It is located 10 kilometers south-west of Tampere and is part of western Finland Pirkanmaa landscape. Pirkkala has 18,132 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) and is 104.04 km ², of which 22.67 km ² water surfaces. Pirkkala is currently the fastest growing municipality in Pirkanmaa.

The population only speaks Finnish.

The airport Tampere Pirkkala, the second most important airport in Finland, located in the southwest of the municipality. Ryanair made ​​connections among other things to Frankfurt Hahn and Bremen from this airport. Other airlines that serve the airport are Finncomm Airlines, SAS subsidiary Blue1 and Wingo XPRS.

This area formed a birch mutation whose leaf margins are strongly notched: the Pirkkala birch (Betula pendula Birkalensis, Finnish: Pirkkalan Koivu ).
