Pohang Steelers

The Pohang Steelers FC is a football franchise from Pohang, South Korea. Currently playing the franchise in the K League Classic, the top division of South Korea.

History

The franchise was founded in 1973 under the name of POSCO as an amateur team and is now one of the most successful franchise in South Korea. 1984, the franchise has been professionalized and changed its name to POSCO Dolphins. Only a year later the name was changed again in POSCO Atoms.

1986 celebrated its first championship in the first season of the newly created K -League the club. It is interesting for statisticians, as the club had more defeats than victories and a negative goal difference. From 1986 to 1998, the franchise was one of the top teams in South Korea. It did not include season worse than 4th place and became in this period three times champion and three times runner-up. In addition, in 1996 winning the inaugural national cup competition.

The franchise renamed itself one more time around, 1995 in Pohang atom before it got its present name in 1997. By winning the South Korean Cup competition 1996, the Steelers have qualified to participate in the Asian Club Championship, which they win and were even able to defend it in the year. After initially ended this successful era of Pohang Steelers and you could only again be runner-up and vice Cup winner. 2007, the team was again champion and moved into Cup final. The defeat in the final one corrected a year later than one Cup Winners' Cup for the second time. 2009 Steelers won the AFC Champions League after a final victory against the Saudi Arabian club Al- Ittihad Jeddah. In the Club World Cup they reached the third place.

In the 2012 season, the team finished 3rd in the K-League. 2013, it was champion and won the FA Cup, bringing that Double as the first team.

Stadium

Since 1991, bear the Pohang Steelers from their games in the Steel Yard Stadium. It has a capacity of 25,000 spectators and was the first pure football stadium in South Korea.
