Pohronská Polhora

Pohronská Polhora ( until 1948 slovak only " Polhora "; Hungarian Erdőköz - to 1886 Zólyompolhora ) is a town in central Slovakia with 1765 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011), the Region belongs to Okres Brezno, a circle of Banskobystrický and traditional landscape Horehronie is counted.

Geography

The municipality is located on the edge of the mountains Veporské Hills (part of the Slovak Ore Mountains ) on the stream Rohozná. Further up the valley, the road to the pass Zbojská ( 725 m nm), and the highest peak is the Fabova hola (1439 m nm) in the National Park Muránska planina. The center is located at an altitude of 618 m nm and is 13 kilometers from Brezno, and 17 kilometers from Tisovec.

History

The town was founded in 1786, previously was only built in 1726, a restaurant. Frequent robber raids on the road between Brezno and Tisovec demanded a settlement in the previously deserted area. The first inhabitants were settlers from eleven villages in the county Arwa. In addition to monitoring the road but also economic reasons were decisive: In the area there were many iron ore mines, which supplied the local blast furnaces, the material. Large forests were suitable for the production of charcoal, which was necessary for iron production. In the neighboring Michalová a blast furnace was opened in 1792, which was in operation until 1877, however, no longer the new iron works in Podbrezová was competitive in recent years.

After the fall of the blast furnaces whose role was replaced by sawing: 1880 a steam saw was opened in place in 1890 another in the district Kubička, in addition to other sources of income such as agriculture and forestry. End of the 19th century, the railway Podbrezová - Tisovec built through the town, which is further up the valley equipped due to large pitch with a gear system.

Until 1918, belonged to the lying in the county Sohl place the Kingdom of Hungary and came after Czechoslovakia and Slovakia today. 1942 burned 158 houses in the village after a fire down; then left the village and 42 families were settled in the church today Nová Polhora, in a large farm at Ploske in Košice.
