Polish presidential election, 2005

The presidential election in Poland in 2005 was the popular election of the Polish head of state on 9 October and 23 October 2005. During the second round of voting, the national conservative Warsaw Mayor Lech Kaczynski sat against the liberal- conservative politician Donald Tusk by and was for a five-year term as president the Republic of Poland elected.

Background

On 23 December 2005, the second five-year term of office of President of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski was to expire. Under the Constitution, the incumbent could not be standing for election. On 23 May 2005, the Marshal of the Sejm Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz ordered the presidential elections on 9 October 2005, any second round of voting on October 23.

The selection rules based on the currently applicable Constitution of 1997. With the right to vote were all equipped with the parliamentary elections and voting citizens with the passive right to vote those who have also completed 35 years of life until the day of the election. The nominations had to present a written support of at least one hundred thousand electorate. If, at the first election no candidate who has the necessary majority of more than 50% of the valid votes cast, a second round of voting would be proclaimed to which the two candidates would be admitted who have received in the first round of voting on most votes ( ballot ). The determination of the validity of the election was incumbent on the Supreme Court and the swearing in of the President of the National Assembly.

A total of sixteen candidates in the next period (August 25, 2005 24:00 Clock ) show 100,000 signatures of registered voters and were allowed after verification of these participate by the electoral committee at the first round of voting:

  • Henryka Bochniarz Teodora ( b. 1947 ) - a doctorate in economics, President of the Employers' Association, supported by the Democratic Party
  • Marek Stefan Borowski ( b. 1946 ) - Economist, Member of the Sejm (since 1991 ), former Marshal of the Sejm (2001-2004), former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance ( 1993-1994), Chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Poland
  • Leszek Bubel Henryk (* 1951) - Goldsmith, journalist, publisher, former deputy Sejm ( 1991-1993), self-proclaimed " leading anti-Semite of the Republic", supported by the Polish National Party
  • Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz (* 1950) - doctor of law, professor, acting Marshal of the Sejm (since 2005) and member of the Sejm (since 1989 ), former Secretary of State (2001-2003), former Prime Minister (1996-1997 ), former Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Justice and Attorney General (1993-1995), former member of the Polish United Workers Party, supported by the Democratic Left Alliance

  • Daniel Tomasz Podrzycki (1963-2005) - metal workers, union activists, supported by an alliance of secular, socialist, anarchist and communist parties
  • January Pyszko (1930-2009) - a university- surgeon, activist of the Association of Foreign Poland, supported by the " organization of the Polish nation - Polish League "
  • Zbigniew Eugeniusz Religa (1938-2009) - a university- heart surgeon, Senator (1993-1997 and since 2001), Konservatist, supported by the Centre Party
  • Andrzej Adam Slomka (* 1963) - graduate educator, leader of the " Confederation of Independent Poland - Patriotic Group ", a splinter group of the Confederation of Independent Poland
  • Donald Franciszek Tusk ( born 1957 ) - Historian, Deputy Marshal of the Sejm (since 2001), Sejm deputy (1991-1993 and since 2001 ), former Senator and Deputy Senate Marshal (1997-2001)
  • Stanisław Tymiński ( b. 1948 ) - a certified electrical engineer, web entrepreneurs, supported by the " All Polish citizens coalition "

Remarkably, seven of the candidates in previous presidential elections, without success candidate: Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz and Stanisław Tymiński in 1990, Leszek Bubel and Lech Kaczyński in 1995, Jarosław Kalinowski in 2000 and Janusz Korwin -Mikke and Andrzej Lepper in 1995 and 2000.

Three candidates have waived before the first ballot and were removed from the candidate list. Zbigniew Religa on September 2, Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz on 14 September and Maciej Giertych on October 4, 2005 On September 24, 2005, the day before the election died Daniel Podrzycki following a road accident and also different from the candidate list. Consequently, stood twelve candidates for election, the names of Giertych and Podrzycki stood on the already printed ballot papers.

Opinion polls

First Cimoszevicz was considered the most promising candidate, followed by far severed Lech Kaczyński, Andrzej Lepper and Zbigniew Religa. However, the negative campaign in the mass media, which was based on allegations of fraud on the part Cimoszewicz former assistant Anna Jarucka caused a rapid collapse of his approval ratings in the polls, mainly in favor of Donald Tusk. Then Cimoszevicz withdrew his candidacy on September 14 in this connection back.

On November 23, 2005, the Supreme Court determined the validity of the election on 9 and 23 October, the three irregularities detected, it is not discussed, since there is no impact on the election result could be determined. On 23 December 2005 laid Lech Kaczyński opposite the National Assembly, chaired by the newly elected Sejmmarschalls Marek Jurek and in the presence of his predecessor, Aleksander Kwasniewski, the oath of office, followed by an address by the President.
