Labour United

The Unia Pracy ( German labor union; UP) is a social democratic party in Poland.

History

The Unia Pracy was created in 1992 through the merger of several small social democratic parties. They bordered on the one hand of liberal and conservative directions, the other part of the post-communist Democratic Left Alliance (SLD). It relies on the intervention of the state in favor of socially disadvantaged, and limiting the influence of the Catholic Church in Polish politics.

1997 failed the UP at the 5- percent threshold and therefore closed before the 2001 elections with the SLD to an electoral alliance together. After the electoral success of 2001 she formed together with the SLD and PSL coalition government under Prime Minister Leszek Miller. The UP was represented in the Sejm with 16 MPs as an independent faction. Its chairman Marek Pol was also the Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister in the Cabinet Miller.

In the 2005 parliamentary elections SLD and UP came again as individual parties. After the left-wing coalition under Leszek Miller, however, was marked by numerous corruption scandals, both parties were clearly punished. The UP could not win a seat more.

During the period of legislature, SLD and UP again in 2006 joined together to form an alliance. However, the electoral coalition this time included also from the Freedom Union ( UW) emerged Democratic Party (PD) and the SLD elimination Social Democracy of Poland ( SdPL ). The success was sobering: In comparison to the summed election results of the individual parties in the Sejm elections in 2005, the alliance lost in the 2007 elections 4.5% of the vote and broke up in 2008 again.
