As acidification of the oceans, the decrease in the pH of sea water is called. It is caused by the absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. The process factors in addition to global warming, one of the main consequences of human emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. While carbon dioxide in the atmosphere physically leads to rising temperatures on Earth, it acts in the sea water chemically. The acidification can be exclusively attributed to CO2, not like the whole global warming on emissions of other greenhouse gases such as methane or nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas.
The consequences of this acidification initially concern kalkschalenbildende beings, their ability to form protective cases decreases with decreasing pH. Because these species often form the basis of food chain in the oceans, to more serious consequences for many of them dependent marine species and as a consequence can it also provides for the need of these people. read more ...
