Pound (currency)

Pound (English pound, Italian lira, French livre ) is the name of various currencies. The currency symbol £ or ₤ often used.

History

With the proliferation of Unit Weight pounds ( weight) in the whole of Europe, it became the namesake of numerous coins and currency systems. Charlemagne laid down in his coinage, that of a Carolingian pound of silver, 240 pennies ( pence ) must be marked. This system has been preserved in the UK and Ireland in pound sterling or Irish pound until 1971.

In Berlin, the term "pound " for 20 Mark was at least until the 1990s, in Cologne to the transition to the Euro known. This is because at the time of the gold standard one pound sterling equivalent to about 20 Reichsmark in the Empire.

Guinee, Guinea Guinée or is an old synonym for pound, which is sometimes still used in England in a sophisticated way of speaking. In Egypt, it is the official name of the Egyptian pound.
