Prestwich

Prestwich is a town in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester in North West England. It lies close to the River Irwell, between the cities of Salford, Manchester and Bury. In Prestwich 's second largest Jewish community in the United Kingdom exists.

History

Through the center Prestwichs leads an old Roman road that connected Manchester with Longridge. It is believed that a Roman military camp was in Prestwich. The first records of Prestwich date from the 11th century.

During the 19th century another city center on the Bury Old Road as the compound of Fairfax Road and Bury New Road was built. With construction of the railway in 1881 attracted merchants from Manchester to Prestwich and built their villas there. The Hospital of Prestwich was built in 1851. In 1912, the population had grown to 12,800 inhabitants, and since the 1930 built to the available fields, so that the population rose to 31,000 by 1961.

Infrastructure

The oldest part of Prestwich is located on the Bury New Road and is also ' Prestwich Village ' called where there is a shopping center, banks and many cafés. To the east of Prestwich is the Heaton Park, which counts with 259 acres of the largest urban parks in Europe.

Prestwich has good transport links to Manchester, Bury and the remaining part of Greater Manchester. Bus lines connect Prestwich with towns and regions in the North and Salford and Monton. Express lines connect with Prestwich Manchester, Burnley and Pendle. In addition, Prestwich is approached at four stations of the tram Manchester Bury.

  • William Sturgeon (1783-1850), physicist and inventor who built the first electric motor and said first electromagnetic solenoid. He lived in Prestwich and is in the cemetery of St. Mary's buried.
