Pusté Úľany

Pusté Úľany (up to 1948 Slovak " Pustý Fedýmeš "; Hungarian Pusztafödémes ) is a municipality in western Slovakia with 1683 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011), which belongs to Okres Galanta, a part of the Trnavský kraj.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Slovak Danube lowland, about on the line between its subunits Danube plain and the Danube hills. Through the town of Bach Stoličný Brook, a tributary of Čierna flows voda. The center is located at an altitude of 124 m nm and is 13 kilometers from Galanta, 15 kilometers from Senec and 18 kilometers from Trnava.

History

Archaeological studies indicate that a settlement goes back to the Neolithic period to the present municipality. In the district Poroské were remains of a settlement dating from the early Middle Ages, discovered shortly before the formation of Great Moravia.

The place itself was mentioned in writing in a document of the Hungarian King Andrew II as Fudemus villa for the first time in 1221. It was a royal estate, lived in the royal beekeeper and which was in the territory of the Bratislava Castle. The name comes from the old Hungarian word födém ( = beehive ), which is included also in the names of three other places in Slovakia in the Slovak form of the name Úľany. Because of the presence of medieval German inhabitants of the name Némethfödémes is occupied in the 15th century.

However, the city suffered a decline in population in the 16th century as a result of plague after the year 1520 as well as plunder by various men in the Turkish wars. Only in the 18th century, the situation and the now well-known as a place Pusztafödémes stabilized belonged to various noble families, of which Zichy was the most influential. 1864 are listed 1,208 inhabitants.

Until 1918, belonged to the county located in the Bratislava city of the Kingdom of Hungary and was then Czechoslovakia and Slovakia today.
