Quamquam pluries

The encyclical Quamquam pluries (August 15, 1889) on the account of the need of the times to be imploring the protection and assistance of St. Joseph in association with the Virgin Mother of God was instituted by Pope Leo XIII. published.

Reason for the encyclical

St. Joseph, even with the addition of a carpenter, first considered in the New Testament of the Bible as a fiance and then as husband of Mary, mother of Jesus.

Veneration of St. Joseph

Pope Sixtus IV in 1481 led the feast of St. Joseph in the Breviary and the Roman Missal, a; Pope Gregory XV. raised it in 1621 to a catered holiday for the whole Church. Pope Clement X in 1670 rose to the rank of the feast; 1714 Pope Clement XI enriched. the festival with its own measurement form and Offizium and Pope Benedict XIII. added the names of the saints in the Litany of the Saints. Pius IX in 1847 stretched. the number of dioceses or religious congregations granted certain protection feast of St. Joseph of the whole Church. On countless prayers way that came from all over the Christian world to him, he proclaimed on December 8, 1870 Saint Joseph solemnly as the protector of the entire Church.

The theological question

The theologians of the 19th century were wondering why St. Joseph is appointed as patron to preserve the church before the rigors of time. With his encyclical, the pope gave a clear answer to this.

Confirmations

Pius XII. introduced in 1955 as a counterpart to the church worldwide committed Labour Day (1 May ), the Day of Remembrance " Joseph the Worker ", which according to the Bible as a tekton ( builder ) was active and so is traditionally regarded as the patron of workers, especially carpenters and lumberjacks. St. Joseph was by Blessed Pope John XXIII. chosen next to the Blessed Virgin and Mother of God to the special patron of the 2.Vatikanischen Council. Pope John Paul II, this justification to families, spouses and all Christians called to his apostolic letter " Redemptoris custos " again in memory and referred to the counsel and the intercession of St. Joseph.
