The Radboud University Nijmegen ( Dutch: Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen ), short- RU, is a Catholic university in the Netherlands. The university was founded in 1923 in Nijmegen, and was called up on September 1, 2004, nor Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen ( KUN).

Precursor

Already 1655 in Nijmegen a former University under the name illustrious Academy was founded, the existence of which, however, remained limited to a short period because of adverse events. In 1665 the city and thus the university was hit by the plague in 1672 was followed by the occupation of Nijmegen by French troops. The university was finally closed in 1679 for lack of funds, after they had lost their last Gerhard Noodt professor.

Overview

With the name change in 2004, the Radboud University Nijmegen ( named after the former bishop of Utrecht Radbod ) seems to distance himself somewhat from the explicit Catholicism, although the Archbishop of Utrecht is still Chancellor of the University. This also fits the withdrawal from the collaboration with the University of Utrecht and the Faculty of Theology and Religion - University of Tilburg.

Withdrawal of the Catholic Magisterium

The Vatican withdrew from the Catholic Theological Faculty of the right to confer academic titles. This decision is justified by the fact that the Catholic faculty since 1980, the demand of the Vatican after an adjustment to its statutes to church policy had not complied. In canon law ( canon ) was determined that any appointment of a professor of theology to the approval of ecclesiastical authority in need, this duty had regarded the university as an academic restriction. This meant that trained theologians can no longer Catholic priest or pastoral at the university. As the only recognized academic training of priests in the Netherlands now remains the Faculty of Theology and Religion - University of Tilburg.
