Ragged Island (Bahamas)

Ragged Iceland is a small island in the southern Bahamas, with an area of ​​15 km ².

Until recently, there were on the island a salt industry, which was founded in the 19th century by Duncan Taylor. After he was also the only village, Duncan Town, named.

The island was devastated by Hurricane Donna and was subsequently abandoned by many residents. The population in 2010 was only 70, according to the 1990 census, 89 and 72 ten years later.

Ragged Iceland is part of the Jumentos cays and Ragged Iceland chain. Here are the known islands Racoon Cay, Hog Cay and Double-Breasted Cay.

Duncan Town is the only settlement on the island chain and is situated in a bay with shallow water. The island is powered exclusively by a mail boat. It also has a small airstrip and a harbor.

Most of the inhabitants are direct descendants of the first settlers and have names such as curling, Lockhart, Maycock, Munroe, Wallace and Wilson.

Despite its remoteness and small population, many residents have held important positions in politics, sports, entertainment and business.
