Renwick, New Zealand

Renwick is a small rural town in the Marlborough region in the north of the South Island of New Zealand. It lies on the south bank of the Wairau River on State Highway 6 Blenheim is located 12 km to the east Havelock is 31 km north. State Highway 63 runs from Renwick in a southwesterly direction through the valley of the Wairau River.

The place had the Census 2006 1872 inhabitants, an increase of 84 since 2001.

The place was originally known as " Upper Wairau ," then as " Renwicktown " after one of the early land owners in the area, Thomas Renwick.

In Renwick, there are several shops, including a dairy shop, bakery, butcher, hairdresser, supermarket, a pub and a brewery.

Accommodations are available in motels, B & B and accommodation for backpackers.

Renwick is located in the center of the wine region of Marlborough. The area is well known for Sauvignon Blanc, wineries such as Isabel Estate and Forrest Estate are located near the resort.

Education

The Renwick School is a co-educational primary school for the first -8. Class and in 2009 had a decile rating of 8 and 395 students.

The first school in Renwick opened early 1861, and used the facilities of the Presbyterian church as a classroom. She was the second school in the Marlborough region. The present school opened in 1864.
