The state election in Rhineland -Palatinate, 1983, March 6, held in conjunction with the general election in 1983, which led to an unusually high turnout of 90.4 %. The FDP did not succeed the first time of entry into the state parliament. They not only failed to clear the five-percent hurdle, but fared worse than the first time candidates countryside. Election winner was led by Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel CDU, which was able to increase its absolute majority.

A one-party government of the CDU under Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel stood SPD and FDP over as opposition parties in parliament.
