Robert S. Vessey

Robert Scadden Vessey ( born May 16, 1858 Winnebago County, Wisconsin, † October 18, 1929 in Pasadena, California ) was an American politician and from 1909 to 1913, the seventh Governor of the State of South Dakota.

Early years and political rise

Robert Vessey attended the public schools of his home in Wisconsin, and then the Daggett Commercial School in Oshkosh. He then worked for five years as a lumberjack in northern Wisconsin. After moving to South Dakota, he was 1899-1908 President of the Wessington Springs State Bank. Between 1905 and 1907 Vessey sat in the Senate of South Dakota. In 1908 he was elected as a candidate of the Republican Party as the new Governor of South Dakota.

Governor of South Dakota

Vessey took up his new post on January 5, 1909. After a re-election in 1910 he was able to exercise it until January 7, 1913. In these four years, the laws for the banking and insurance sectors have been revised in South Dakota. Also, the rail industry was legally regulated. On the national trend of those years also pursued Vessey, a progressive policy. In 1910 the new State Capitol in the capital Pierre was completed. This structure is used with some temporary extensions to this day by the Government of South Dakota. With the final completion of the Capitol all ended discussions about a transfer of the capital.

After the end of his tenure, Vessey retired to private life. He was still engaged in the banking business. At the same time he also dealt with the sheep and was co-owner of a general store. Ex - Governor Vessey died in 1929. He was married to Florence Albert, with whom he had four children.
