Walter Dale Miller

Walter Dale Miller ( born October 5, 1925 in View Field, Meade County, South Dakota ) is a former American politician ( Republican). He was between 1993 and 1995 the 29th Governor of the State of South Dakota.

Early years and political rise

Walter Miller attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Then he made a remarkable political career. Between 1967 and 1986 he was continuously deputy in the House of Representatives from South Dakota. During this time he was temporarily leader of the Republicans and President of the Parliament. At the same time, he served 1970-1985 as president of the insurance company Dakota National Life Insurance. In 1984, he supported the presidential campaign of Ronald Reagan and four years later by George Bush. In 1986 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota. He was the first incumbent, who held this office full-time. As on April 19, 1993 saw the incumbent Governor George S. Mickelson in a plane crash, Miller had to take over the office as his deputy.

In the nine months of his tenure, he promotes the education policy. He also encouraged the citizens of his state to join a health insurance. Other focal points of his brief tenure included the development of rural areas and the expansion of the telecommunications network. In addition there were problems caused by a large flood in the east of the state. In 1994, Miller was running for re-election, but lost already in the primaries to the former Governor Bill Janklow.

After the end of his term in January 1997, he became ranchers in South Dakota. Walter Miller is married and father of four children and two stepchildren.
