Roes Welcome Sound

Geographical location

Roes Welcome Sound is a strait of the Arctic Ocean in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut in Canada.

It separates the island Southampton Iceland, which is part of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago - from westerly mainland. The width of the strait varies 24-113 km. The length of Roes Welcome Sound is 290 km.

The Roes Welcome Sound opens to the south to Hudson Bay. On the west bank of the canal is the Wager Bay. To the north, close to the Frozen Strait and Repulse Bay.

The strait is named after Sir Thomas Roe, a friend of the polar explorer Luke Fox and donors whose Arctic trip in 1631.

Through the Roes Welcome Sound leads a walking route of the Greenland whale.
