Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dar-es-Salaam

The Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam ( Latin: Archidioecesis Daressalaamensis ) is a location in Tanzania Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Dar es Salaam.

History

The Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam was on November 16, 1887 by Pope Leo XIII. from the Apostolic Vicariate of territory Zanzibar established as Apostolic Prefecture South Zanzibar. On September 15, 1902, the Apostolic Prefecture South Zanzibar was Leo XIII. elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate. The Apostolic Vicariate of South Zanzibar changed on August 10, 1906 its name in apostolic vicariate Dar es Salaam. On November 12, 1913, the Apostolic Vicariate of Dar es Salaam were from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Lindi. A further transfer of territory took place on March 3, 1922 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Iringa.

On March 25, 1953, the Apostolic Vicariate of Dar es Salaam was by Pope Pius XII. raised to an archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam announced on 21 April 1964 from parts of its territory to the foundation of the diocese Mahenge.
