Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi

The Archdiocese of Nairobi (Latin: Archidioecesis Nairobiensis ) is located in Kenya metropolitan diocese of the Roman Catholic Church.

History

Forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Nairobi is the February 26, 1860 spun off from the diocese of Saint- Denis- de -La Réunion Apostolic Prefecture Zanguebar, which was lodged on November 23, 1883 to a Vicariate Apostolic. On November 16, 1887 vicariate was divided; in the Apostolic Vicariate Nordsansibar and Südsansibar. On January 21, 1904, September 14, 1905 and on May 11, 1906, the Apostolic Vicariate was Nordsansibar parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Benadir, the mission sui juris Kenya and the Apostolic Vicariate Zentralsansibar from. On 21 December 1906, the name was changed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Zanzibar.

On March 25, 1953, the foundation of today's Archdiocese of Nairobi was done. Since then, parts of its territory to the creation of new dioceses, the Archdiocese was different from: On 8 May 1955, the diocese of Mombasa and Zanzibar, on 20 February 1956, the Apostolic Prefecture of Kitui, on 20 October 1959, the Apostolic Prefecture of Ngong, on 12 December in 1964, the Apostolic Administration of Zanzibar and Pemba, founded on 11 January 1968, the diocese of Nakuru and on 29 May 1969, the diocese of Machakos.

Suffragan dioceses are Kericho, Kitui, Machakos, Nakuru and Ngong.
