Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kananga

The Archdiocese of Kananga (Latin: Archidioecesis Kananganus ) is a located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Kananga.

History

The Archdiocese of Kananga was established on March 18, 1904 by Pope Pius X as Apostolic Prefecture Kasai Superiore. On 13 June 1917, the Apostolic Prefecture Kasai Superiore was by Pope Benedict XV. elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate. The Apostolic Vicariate of Kasai Superiore announced on May 25, 1936 from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture Tshumbe. A further transfer of territory took place on April 13, 1937 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture Ipamu. The Apostolic Vicariate of Kasai Superiore was renamed on 10 March 1949 in Apostolic Vicariate Luluabourg. On 24 March 1953, the Vicariate Apostolic Luluabourg were parts of its territory from the Apostolic Vicariate establishing Cabinda and establishing the Apostolic Prefecture Mweka. A further transfer of territory took place on April 25, 1959 establishing the Apostolic Vicariate Luebo.

On November 10, 1959, the Apostolic Vicariate Luluabourg was by Pope John XXIII. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Cum parvulum to an archbishopric. The Archdiocese Luluabourg was from 1963 parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Administration of Mbuji -Mayi. For more territorial concessions were made on May 3, 1966 to the bishopric Mbujimayi and on 26 September 1967 on the establishment of the Diocese of Luiza. On 14 June 1972, the Archdiocese Luluabourg was renamed Archdiocese of Kananga.
