Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa

The Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa (Latin: Archidioecesis Tegucigalpensis ) is a location in Honduras Roman Catholic archdiocese headquartered in Tegucigalpa.

History

Already in 1527 founded the Medici Pope Clement VII the Diocese of Honduras, presumably as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Seville Spanish.

The Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa was founded in 1561 as the Diocese of Comayagua from the diocese of Guatemala out by the Pope Leo X, also from the family of the Medici; Metropolitan diocese was the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo.

1916 was founded by territorial concessions the Vicariate of San Pedro Sula and the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Copan. Pope Benedict XV. declared on 2 February 1916, the Diocese of Comayagua to the present Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa. First archbishop was Santiago María Martinez y Cabanas. This was followed by the establishment of territorial concessions of the Prelature of Inmaculada Concepción de la BVM en Olancho (1949 ), the Diocese of Comayagua (1963 ), the Prelature of Choluteca (1964) and the Diocese of Yoro ( 2005).
