The Archdiocese of Guatemala (Latin: Archidioecesis Guatimalensis ) is an Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Guatemala and Sacatepéquez

History

The diocese was founded on December 18, 1534 by Pope Paul III. diocese as Guatemala (Santiago de Guatemala) ( " Guatimalensis ( Sancti Jacobi Majoris de Guatemala) " ) founded in the Diocese of Santo Domingo out and was under the Archdiocese of Seville. With elevation of the bishopric to the archbishopric of Mexico in 1546, the diocese was transferred to the Archdiocese of Mexico. First bishop was the Spaniard Francisco Marroquín. By Pope Benedict XIV, the diocese was elevated to an archdiocese on December 16, 1743; first archbishop was Pedro Pardo de Figueroa.
