Roman Catholic Diocese of Gweru

The Diocese of Gweru (Latin: Dioecesis Gueruensis ) is a location in Zimbabwe Roman Catholic diocese based in Gweru. It includes the districts of Gweru, Chirumhanzu, Kwekwe, Mberengwa, Shurugwi and Zvishavane in the Midlands Province.

History

Pope Pius XII. founded on 14 November 1946, the Apostolic Prefecture of Fort Victoria. The mission was entrusted to the Congregation of Bethlehem Mission Immensee. With the bull In Arcis Victoriae it was collected on 24 June 1950 for the Apostolic Vicariate.

It was on January 1, 1955, the Apostolic Constitution Quod Christ to the diocese, which took the name Gwelo collected, which was the Archdiocese of Salisbury assumed as suffragan. On 25 June 1982 it adopted the current name. On June 10, 1994, was part of the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Bulawayo.

Parts of its territory it lost in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:

  • February 2, 1953 at the Prefecture Apostolic of Umtali;
  • February 9, 1999 to the diocese of Masvingo.
