Roman Catholic Diocese of Jaffna

The Diocese of Jaffna (Latin: Dioecesis Iaffnensis ) is a location in Sri Lanka Roman Catholic diocese based in Jaffna.

History

The Diocese of Jaffna was on 17 February in 1845 by Pope Gregory XVI. out of territory of the Diocese of Colombo, established as a Vicariate Apostolic of Jaffna.

On September 1, 1886, the Vicariate Apostolic of Jaffna was by Pope Leo XIII. applicable to the diocese and the Archdiocese of Colombo is a suffragan. The Diocese of Jaffna was on December 19, 1975 from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Anuradhapura. A further transfer of territory took place on 24 January 1981 foundation of the diocese of Mannar.
