Roman Catholic Diocese of León in Nicaragua

The Diocese of León en Nicaragua (Latin: Dioecesis Leonensis in Nicaragua ) is a located in Nicaragua Roman Catholic diocese based in León. It includes the two departments of León and Chinandega.

History

With the Apostolic Constitution Equum reputamus Pope Clement VII founded the bishopric of León de Nicaragua on November 3, 1534 from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo, where it was a suffragan.

It was on February 11, 1547 part of the ecclesiastical province of Lima, and remained so until 16 December 1743 when it became part of the ecclesiastical province of Guatemala. On 28 February 1850, there was a part of the territory from the Diocese of San José de Costa Rica.

On 2 December 1913, lost part of the territory of the Diocese of Granada, the Apostolic Vicariate of Bluefields and the Archdiocese of Managua, where it was a suffragan. Another part of the territory it lost on December 17, 1962 to the Diocese of Estelí.
