Sachsenburg

Saxon Castle is a market town with 1317 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia.

Geography

Geographical location

The community is located at the outlet of the upper Drava valley on Lurnfeld. Northwest of Saxony castle is the Kreuzeckgruppe and southeast Goldeck.

History

The area around Saxony castle was strategically important already in Roman times. By 1200, two castles were built at the mountain fortress. The first written record comes from the year 1213. A first settlement of traders and commercial people probably originated in the early 13th century at the fork of the Drava and Moelltal. For 1292 here is the seat of the Salzburg archbishop - Office is established and from 1326 Saxony Castle is a market that was 1358 already walled.

In the house on the market place number 7 Empress Maria Theresa received in 1765 petitioners from the rich surrounding area.

In March 1848 Josef Klaus and Gottlieb Supersperg shouted the slogan "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" in the wake of the March Revolution from the Republic of Saxony castle. After one month, sat a company of soldiers of the Republic Sachsenburg an end. During this time, stagecoaches were prevented from crossing and the citizens of Saxony castle refused to tax payments.

1850 constituted the market town of Saxony Castle, 1865 to 1889, the local church Pusarnitz was temporarily connected. In the 1973 local government reform Pusarnitz, Moellbruecke and a large part of the municipal district of Saxony castle were united to the new market town Lurnfeld. After a referendum in 1992, however, Saxony castle became independent again.

Population

According to the 2001 census has Sachsenburg 1438 inhabitants, of which 92.1 % Austrian, Turkish 2.9% and 1.8 % Bosnian citizen. 83.1 % of the population are Roman Catholic and 8.5 % for the Protestant Church, 5.9% to Islam. 1.2 % have no religious confession.

Coat of arms

The leadership of a seal is opened from mid-16th century and detected on a document dated 17 April 1742. It shows a Saxe or Multer, an elongated wooden device that was used for gold panning, which (especially in the Siflitzgraben here ) alludes to in the Middle Ages in Upper Carinthia common gold panning and possibly derived from place names.

In a first coat of arms and flag award certificate 1973 separate minerals were also drawn by the Saxe and emblazoned, which was omitted in the Neuverleihung after re- independence of the community. The blazon of the coat of arms in the award document dated 3 October 1995 reads: " Blue diagonally to the right a golden Saxe. " The flag is blue and yellow with integrated crest.
