San Lorenzo de Almagro

Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro is an Argentine football club based in Buenos Aires. From the fans, the club also El Ciclón, the Cyclone and Los azulgrana, the Blue - Red ' called. Other common nicknames are Cuervo, Los Santos de Boedo, gauchos and matadors.

History

The club was founded on April 1, 1908 Almagro neighborhood. The name component San Lorenzo was chosen in honor of the Catholic priest Lorenzo Massa, who allowed the football-mad residents of the district to organize football games in the backyard of his church.

The CA San Lorenzo quickly became one of the top clubs in Buenos Aires. Since the beginning of Argentina's professional league (1931 ) is San Lorenzo, together with the Boca Juniors, River Plate, Independiente and Racing Club Avellaneda one of the " big five " in Argentine football.

In the 1930s, became very popular in the Basque community of Buenos Aires San Lorenzo due to some players of Basque origin (eg Isidro Lángara ). The first title in the professional league was won in 1933.

1946 San Lorenzo won the championship again, and then began a tour of Spain and Portugal, which is one of the biggest events in the club's history. After a defeat against Real Madrid won San Lorenzo both the games against Barcelona and against the Spanish and Portuguese national team. The Spanish press called San Lorenzo as "the best team in the world ".

In the years 1968 to 1974 San Lorenzo won a total of four league titles. The team of 1968 was known as los matadors, as they won the championship without a single defeat.

1981 San Lorenzo had to stay in the Primera B, but returned the same the following season back in top league. At this time the club had high debt and had no stadium. Under President Fernando Miele (1986-2001) San Lorenzo received a stadium again and won two league titles. The current president Rafael Savino.

The traditional local rivals from the south of Buenos Aires is Huracán. Rivalries exist in addition to Boca Juniors, River Plate, Independiente, Racing and Newell's Old Boys from Rosario.

Current coach Leonardo is Madelón (as of: January 3, 2012). On March 31, 2013, the goalkeeper Pablo Migliore was because of alleged involvement in a murder case after the final whistle the home game against Newell 's Old Boys arrested.

Stadium

The old Gasómetro Stadium in Boedo district had to be sold because of the debt burden in 1979 and was demolished. The new stadium in Nueva Pompeya district, known as Nuevo Gasómetro, was opened on 16 December 1993. The official name of the stadium is Estadio Pedro Bidegain, after a former club president. It has a capacity of 43 494 seats.
