Santa Catarina is a neighborhood and a former Portuguese parish ( freguesia ) in the 1st Bairro the capital Lisbon. 2013 went in the course of administrative reform of the municipalities of São Paulo, Encarnação, Santa Catarina and Mercês the new township Misericordia forth.

The hilly town is surrounded by the districts of São Paulo, Lapa, Mercês and Encarnação. With parts of the latter, it forms the famous Bairro Alto. From here it strongly decreases towards the Tagus river. Santa Catarina is characterized by narrow, sometimes steep streets. Most important artery for traffic is the Calçada do Combro. It points out the direction of " Praça Luis de Camões " Coming to the parliament building São Bento.

History

Santa Catarina (now Encarnação ) created on October 9, 1559 from parts of the municipalities of Loreto and the Martyrs. It extended formerly from Príncipe Real district to the Tagus waterfront and was until the mid-20th century in terms of area one of the largest and most populous communities of the city. Due to the local government reform of 1959, the municipality received her cut, she retained until its dissolution in 2013.

In the local elections of 2005, the parties reached to select the local parliament following voting rights:

President of the " Junta de Freguesia " is Maria Irene dos Santos Lopes of the Socialists (PS).
