São Paulo Museum of Art

The Museu de Arte de São Paulo, or MASP is located in São Paulo (Brazil ), was established on 2 October 1947 by Assis Chateaubriand and Pietro Maria Bardi.

Building

The wife Bardis, the famous Italian architect Lina Bo Bardi, designed the museum building, which was opened in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II on 7 November 1968. As should remain free from Avenida Paulista, where the new building is, the view of the city center, the building is worn suspended from four steel beams. The space under the building is still public space with numerous activities, such as an antiques market, which always takes place on Sundays.

Collections

The MASP is the most important art museum in Brazil with an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures from the 14th century to the present. Among the artists represented include Karel Appel, Max Beckmann, Giovanni Bellini, Giovanni Boldini, Pierre Bonnard, Paris Bordone, Hieronymus Bosch, Sandro Botticelli, Alexander Calder, Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Jean -Baptiste- Siméon Chardin, Francois Clouet, Jean- Baptiste- Camille Corot, Piero di Cosimo, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Honoré Daumier, Edgar Degas, Eugène Delacroix, Anthony van Dyck, Jean- Honoré Fragonard, Paul Gauguin, El Greco, Vincent van Gogh, Jean Baptiste Greuze, Frans Hals, Hans Holbein the Younger, Jean -Auguste -Dominique Ingres, Fernand Léger, Jacques Lipchitz, Édouard Manet, Andrea Mantegna, Henri Matisse, Hans Memling, Amedeo Modigliani, Claude Monet, Max Pechstein, Pablo Picasso, Nicolas Poussin, Raphael, Rembrandt van Rijn, Pierre- Auguste Renoir, Diego Rivera, Peter Paul Rubens, Salomon van Ruysdael, Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec, Maurice Utrillo, Jacopo Tintoretto, Suzanne Valadon and Edouard Vuillard. In addition, there are collections of African and Asian art, antiques and 20th century Brazilian art.

On 20 December 2007, two paintings in the morning at 5 clock stolen worth about 70 million euros. The stolen works they are " Portrait de Suzanne Bloch " by Pablo Picasso, as well as to the picture " O Lavrador de Cafe " by Candido Portinari. The police of São Paulo could make the pictures 8 January 2008 identified and undamaged return to the museum.
