Sauk Rapids is a city in Benton County in the U.S. state of Minnesota.

History

Sauk Rapids was originally little more than a forest of oak, maple and lime trees on the banks of the Mississippi River until the first house was built in 1851. These were to a mansion with the name Lynden Terrace, the WH Wood was built. Shortly thereafter, followed by other settlers. The settlement was named after the rapids below the mouth of the Sauk River to the Mississippi. It soon became a storehouse built and then a hotel and a prison. In 1856 the county seat was moved to Watab, but renewed in 1859. A new courthouse was built in 1897, the seat of the County but was moved permanently to Foley, where he is today. 1917 burned down the courthouse. The first settlers built a Congregational church, which was soon followed by a Methodist church and later churches of the Episcopal Church and the Lutherans. The first newspaper in Minnesota outside of St. Paul was the " Sauk Rapids Frontiersman ", which first appeared in 1854. In 1876, the first bridge over the Mississippi River was built. which was destroyed later in the same year and in 1879 rebuilt. The flour mill was built in 1875, but was destroyed in 1886. 1874 Sauk Rapids was terminus of a railway line. The city was a trans-shipment of goods of the settlers of the northern Red River Valley. A bi-weekly stagecoach connection was to St. Cloud and Crow Wing. The first school was built in 1886. By 1886 Sauk Rapids was one of the most important cities in Minnesota, but on April 14 afternoon, a tornado swept through the city. The tornado took their way through the center of the city and destroyed all the local shops, 44 residents were killed and hundreds injured. The disaster was a setback for the place and despite the reconstruction he has not regained its former importance.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.5 km ², 11.8 km ² it accounts for land and 0.6 km ² waters.

Demographic data

In the census of 2000, Sauk Rapids 10,213 inhabitants were counted in 3,921 households and 2,599 families. The population density was 862.9 inhabitants / km ². The number of housing units was 4,017, which corresponds to a density of 339.4 housing / km ².

In 37.9 % of households were living children under the age of 18 and 52.1 % of households are married couples living together, 10.9 % of households had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7 % of households were non-families. 26.2 % of all households were made up of individuals and 10.3% anyone over the age of 65 years or older was living alone. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family consisted of 3.09 persons.

Of the population 28.1% were less than 18 years old, 9.6 % were in the age group of 18 to 24 years, 33.4 % were between 25 and 44 years old and 17.8 % between 45 and 64 years. 11.2% were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males; each accounted for 86.1 men per 100 women in the age 18 and over.

The average income per household was $ 45,857, and the median family income was U.S. $ 53 938. The men had on average an income of 36 074 U.S. $, compared to U.S. $ 24 657 for women. The per capita income amounted to U.S. $ 19,510. About 2.8 % of families and 4.9 % of the population were below the poverty line; this applied to 4.5 % of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
