Scott Douglas Altman ( born August 15, 1959 in Lincoln, Illinois, USA) is an American former test pilot and astronaut.

Training

Altman graduated in 1977 from the Pekin Community High School in Pekin (Illinois ) and finished four years later, his Bachelor's degree in aeronautics and aerospace engineering at the University of Illinois. In 1990, he earned a master's degree in aeronautical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey ( California).

Military training

Altman came in August 1981 with the rank of ensign in the U.S. Navy one. He got his pilot wings awarded in February 1983 and then flew the Grumman F-14 fighter aircraft in the "Fighter Squadron 51" on the Navy base in Miramar. In August 1987, Altman was (better known under the name "Top Gun" ) was added to the test pilot school "United States Navy Fighter Weapons School ". Altman closed the school in June 1990 with honors. Then he spent two years as a test pilot at various F -14 projects before he accompanied the first use of the then new F- 14D as a maintenance and operations officer. For his role during Operation Southern Watch, he was the "Navy Air Medal " award. Shortly after his return from Iraq Altman was selected for the astronaut program. He has flown over 5000 flight hours in more than 40 different aircraft types.

Space flights

In its first two space flights with STS- 90 and STS -106, he worked as a pilot, on his third and fourth with STS- 109 and STS -125 as commander.

STS -90

On April 17, 1998 ( 18:19 UTC) started the mission from the launch pad 39 -B at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC ) in an orbital altitude of 278 km. As commander of STS- 125 Altman directed the fifth and final servicing and repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. The launch took place on 11 May 2009, the landing on 24 May 2009 at Edwards Air Force Base.
