Semyon Ignatyev

Semyon Denisovich Ignatiev (Russian Семён Денисович Игнатьев; * 1 Septemberjul / September 14 1904greg in Karlovka, Russian Empire, today Karliwka, Poltava Oblast, Ukraine, .. † November 27, 1983 in Moscow ) was a Soviet politician.

Biography

Ignatiev joined as a laborer in 1919 the youth organization Komsomol and the beginning of the 1920s the Soviet secret police, the GPU. After joining the CPSU, he worked until 1951 as a party official.

In the following years, he was from 1937 to 1943 secretary of the Communist Party in the Buryat Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ( ASSR ), 1943-1946 First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Bashkir ASSR, 1946-1949 Secretary of the Communist Party of the Byelorussian SSR, and between 1949-1951 Secretary of the Communist Party of the Ukrainian SSR.

On 9 August 1951, he was then in place of Sergei Ogolzow Minister of State Security of the USSR ( Министр государственной безопасности СССР ). He was also a 1952-1961 member of the Central Committee (CC ) of the CPSU, and from October 1952 to March 1953 Member of the Politburo of the CPSU.

In this role, he was, according to the Secret Speech of Nikita Khrushchev at the XX. Congress of the CPSU in February 1956, responsible for the investigation of the so-called " doctors' plot ". He was commissioned by Joseph Stalin under the threat of his own death in order to investigate a possible conspiracy by a number of Jewish doctors in the Kremlin. Reason for the investigation were particular circumstances of Stalin's close associate and member of the Politburo of the CPSU Andrei Alexandrovich Zhdanov on 31 August 1948, and the alleged damage to the health of other leading personalities of the state and party leadership. Two of the doctors died during the investigation, while the other accused were released immediately after the death of Stalin on 5 March 1953.

Ignatieff himself was still released on the day of Stalin's death as Minister of State Security after a heart attack and dissolved the Ministry as a separate ministry and assumed the responsibilities of the Minister of the Interior Lawrenti Beria.

He was initially on March 6, 1953 Secretary of the Central Committee (CC ) of the CPSU, but already discontinued one month later on April 6, 1953 for "political blindness and gullibility " in the Doctors' Plot.
