Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca

The Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca ( SFM) operates the rail lines Palma-Inca - Manacor, Inca - Sa Pobla and the Metro de Palma. It is a state-owned railway company of the Spanish Balearic Islands Region, with headquarters in the capital Palma.

History

The first railway line between Palma and Mallorca Inca was from Mallorca engineer Eusebi Estada i Sureda (1843-1917) planned and opened in February 1875. It was built mainly with English material as a narrow-gauge railway with a track width of 914 mm equal to 3 English feet, which allows the use of already available at that time British steam locomotives and cars allowed and thus kept costs low. In the following years, the other routes via Manacor to Arta, Sa Pobla, of Santa Maria, on the route Palma - Inca to Felanitx and from Palma to Santanyi were built. By 1977, however, all routes of Ferrocarriles de Mallorca were shut down except for the route Palma - Inca.

In 1994, the current state company Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca was founded by the Government of the Balearic Islands. Since then, the fleet has been modernized, made the Umspurung on the meter gauge and expanded its route network again. Following the existing route from Palma to Inca 1981 abandoned lines to Sa Pobla was reactivated in 2000 initially.

In 2003, the extension was followed to Manacor. When the residents of Petra demanded the construction of a tunnel on the old route, the path was instead guided around the city, so that the new breakpoint just 500 meters outside of the village is because the SFM was not willing to pay for a tunnel. The railway facilities of the route Manacor Arta are still present, but in a state of decay. Currently (as of 2010 ), the route to Arta restored and renovated stations. In addition to Sa Pobla a new route to Alcudia be built.

Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca recorded in 2005 a new passenger record: In April, 320,000 passengers were counted. The Company will therefore increase its fleet; 2002 have already been several new, now three -car multiple units with expanded capacity, but technically only slightly different from the previous two-piece and can be coupled with these train sets to put into operation.

In the spring of 2010, a landslide occurred in the night-time operation break on the Streckenast to Manacor. The first coming of Manacor train drove into the boulders, derailed and was heavily damaged. The reasons for the landslide to September 2010 were not yet fully understood, the trains ran during the road closures trips between Palma and Sineu Sineu between Manacor and was a rail replacement bus service with buses. The damaged vehicles of the train accident are partially draped with tarps, on a gravel place on Enllaç station.

In July 2011, was used by the Balearic Government Rosé Ramón Orta as managing director of the company. The SFM is currently in debt. Thus, the liabilities alone to the banks amounted to 350 million euros in annual revenue of 5 million euros compared to payroll expenses of 14.1 million euros. Invoices from suppliers could not be paid since October 2010. For the new line Manacor Arta is a construction freeze after 29 percent of the project were executed ( without the purchase of new trains 19 percent). The timing of the resumption of work at the track is questionable.
