Shakhtyorsk

Schachtjorsk (Russian Шахтёрск, Japanese塔 路 町, toro -chō ) is a town in Sakhalin Oblast (Russia) with 8382 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies a few kilometers from the west coast of Sakhalin Island, about 350 km northwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Yuzhno -Sakhalinsk, the Tatar Strait between the Japanese Sea and Ochotskischem sea.

The city is Schachtjorsk belongs administratively to Rajon Uglegorsk. It is located about 10 km north of Rajonzentrums. The city Schachtjorsk subordinated administratively is the south to Udarnoje settlement (also known as " Udarny " means ).

History

The town was founded under the name Toro -chō after 1905, while the membership of the southern part of the island ( up to 50 ° latitude ) to Japan ( under the Treaty of Portsmouth that ended the Russo Japanese War 1904-1905 ).
