Shelburne is a town in Chittenden County in the U.S. state of Vermont with 7,144 inhabitants ( 2010).

Name

The name ' Shelburne ' goes back to the British Member of Parliament William Petty Fitzmaurice, Second Earl of Shelburne.

Location and extent

Shelburne is located at the foothills of the Green Mountains on the shores of Lake Champlain about 16 miles south of Burlington.

The area of the city covers 116.3 km ², of which 53.3 km ² of waters however are covered.

Population

Shelburne last counted 7,144 inhabitants ( census 2010). In 2000, of the then 6,944 inhabitants, 97.6 % "white ", 1 % Asian, 0.86% Latin American and 0.23 % black. There were also 0.1 " Native Americans ", ie descendants of North American Indian tribes.
