Shemya Iceland is the easternmost and largest of the Semichi Islands, a subgroup of the Near Islands in the far west of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. Shemya Iceland is separated from Nizki Iceland in the west by the Shemya Pass with the small islands Hammerhead Iceland and Lotus Iceland and is located about 1,900 km southwest of Anchorage. The land area of the island is 15.289 km ². According to the 2000 census officially 27 people lived on the island.

History

The Russian ship Saint Peter and Paul suffered shipwreck here in 1762, it survived the majority of the team.

Since 1943 there are at Shemya Air Force Base Eareckson Air Station, originally called Shemya Army Air Base, with a 3 km long runway. Main tasks of the air base are radar, surveillance, weather monitoring and aircraft fueling.
