Shimokita District, Aomori

Shimokita (Japanese下 北 郡, -gun ) is a district located in Aomori Prefecture in Japan. It lies at the northern end of the main Japanese island of Honshu in the field of Shimokita Peninsula to the west and east of the city of Mutsu.

In 2003, the population was 36,000, with a total area of 1168.90 km ² which is a population density of 30.83 persons per km ².

However, the small towns Kawauchi Ohata (大 畑 町, machi ) and the village Wakinosawa Since then (川 内 町, machi ), (沢 村, -mura胁 野) been (including the Osorezan ) incorporated into the city of Mutsu. The county has lost a third of its population and about half of its surface and is (as of February 1, 2014) only 17,495 inhabitants at 550.98 km ². It therefore contains only the coastal strip to the south and east of the Cape Oma in the northeast of the peninsula ( Kazamaura, grandma and Sai ), and the area around the Cape Shiriya (尻 屋 崎, Shiriya -saki ) in the northeast ( Higashidori ). The northernmost point of Honshu is therefore still in Shimokita.

Among the native species there is also a population of Japanese macaques, which are thus the most northerly living monkeys in the world.
