Shitō-ryū

Shito- Ryu (Japanese糸 东流, German " school of Shi and Tō ") is a style of Japanese martial arts, Karatedo, which was founded in 1934 by Mabuni Mabuni in Osaka. He unites in his conception of Karatedo the Okinawan styles of Shorin- Ryu and Shorei - Ryu.

Origin

Many influences, not only Okinawan, but also Chinese concepts are merged in this style. This is partly a fact that Mabuni Mabuni had two champions: Higashionna Kanryo and Itosu Yasutsune. Mabuni honored both masters by the fact that he named his style in the name of his master after each syllable. Thus elements of the Shorin- Ryu ( Itosu ) with Shorei - Ryu elements ( Higashionna ) were connected. Special Kata that are not trained in other styles and their origins in Chinese Baihequan (白鹤 拳Chinese, Pinyin báihèquán, Japanese Hakutsuru -ken, GV White Crane style) are, are Hakucho and Nipaipo.

1952 Mabuni died Mabuni, and thus began a division of Shito - Ryu. His official successor and heir is Mabuni Ken'ei. His second son Kenzo Mabuni and other masters of Shito - Ryu founded their own interpretations of style.

In addition to Shotokan, Wado - Ryu and Goju - Ryu, Shito - Ryu is now regarded as one of the four main directions of Karatedo.

Name

The name Shito- Ryu is, as already mentioned, a composition of the first syllables of surnames of the two teachers Mabuni Mabuni:

  • Itosu Yasutsunes (糸 洲 安 恒) first syllable characters ,糸, translates as thread and is according to Japanese reading ( kun - reading) ito in Sino- Japanese reading ( on- reading) shi pronounced.
  • Higashionna Kanryo (东 恩纳 寛 量) name starts with the character东, which stands for east and adjacent to the Kun - reading higashi the On- reading tō has.
