Sigered of Kent

Sigered (also Sigeredus, Sigiraed, Sigiræd; † 764 ) was from before 762 to 764 co-regent of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Kent.

Life

With Eardwulfs Death before 762 the rule of the Kentish dynasty of Oiscingas ended in the West Kents. His successor was Sigered, which presumably originated from the royal dynasty of Essex. In the East Kent prevailed Aethelberht II, the 762 Eadberht II succeeded.

From the reign Sigereds two charters or their copies remain. The Charter S32 Sigered authenticated in 762 donated by arable land at Rochester to Bishop Eardwulf for the local monastery. Eadberht II confirmed these land-grant also with his hands. The Charter S33 dates from the period between 762 and 764 In it Sigired referred to as rex dimidie partis prouincie Cantuariorum ( "King of the Half province Kent ' ). In her Sigered transferred lands at Aeslingaham ( Islingham at Frindsbury ) and grazing rights in the western Weald to Bishop Eardwulf. This charter was confirmed by Eanmund (around 764-765? ), The Royal East Kent.

Around the year 764 ended the rule Sigereds and Eanmunds as Offa, king of Mercia, the supremacy over Kent gained. Offa sat Ecgberht II in western and eastern Heahberht in Kent as a vassal kings. Probably Sigered died around 764 in these power struggles.
