Simrishamn Municipality

Simrishamn is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the southern Swedish province of Skåne County and the historical province Scania. The main town of the municipality in the region Österlen is Simrishamn.

Geography

Approximately half of the municipal area is covered with farmland. The other half make forest, meadows and development. The northern part of the township is hilly and has more forest land on. The highest point is the Urberg Stenshuvud in the national park. The coast is very varied, with rocky and sandy beaches. Because of the many summer homes located in the municipality, its population swells in the summer months up to twofold.

History

In the Middle Ages the town Östra Tommarp (then Tumathorp ), the City Simrishamn located eight kilometers west of the capital of the municipality. There was a private mint and a larger monastery. After Tumathorp 1304 was almost completely destroyed in a fire and the German Hanse established in Simrishamn, Tumathorp lost its previous position and lost in 1537 even the city rights.

Economy

Economically, the community is dominated by tourism, craft shops, fishing and fish processing, and agriculture and fruit growing. The Port of Simrishamn is the third largest fishing port in Sweden. The harvesting of the approximately 500,000 fruit trees of the community make up more than a third of Swedish production. Tourism employs about 500 people.

Attractions

A few kilometers outside Simrishamns towards Ystad is a medieval castle Glimmingehus. In Kivik each year there is a big market and in the vicinity of this town is the grave of Kivik.
