Skellefteå

Skellefteå is a city in the Swedish province of Västerbotten County and the historic province of Västerbotten. It is the capital of the municipality of the same name.

The city was founded in 1845 by the vicar Nils Nordlander, making it one of the youngest towns on the coast of northern Sweden. As a religious gathering place but the place was for a long time is important. Around the church there were a number of buildings that were used by the inhabitants of the surrounding area at church celebrations as sleeping places. This church city fell, however, multiple fires in. At the time of the industrial revolution almost all wooden buildings were replaced by brick houses.

In nearby mine cars of today's Boliden AB have long been won arsenic and gold, giving the city the nickname " City of Gold " earned.

Traffic

Skellefteå, located on the street 4, which runs approximately parallel to the Baltic coast. Other important compounds are the Silberweg to Bodø in Norway and the highway 364 towards Umeå.

A railway line, which would also include with Skellefteå is currently in the planning phase. The former railway siding to the main line ( stambanan ) is today traveled only by freight trains. The nearest passenger station is located in Bastuträsk belonging to the neighboring community Norsjö.

The nearest airport with flights to Stockholm -Arlanda Airport, the Skellefteå Airport is located 20 km south of the city center.
